Product Review: Joe’s Oat Patties Vegan Burger Mix
Looking around Instagram, I happened upon some pictures posted by Joe’s Oat Patties that caught my attention. First because the family promoting this new vegan product was black (say whaaaatttt?), and secondly because the pictures of the dishes I saw looked REALLY tasty.
I wasted no time in shooting off a message to Joe’s Oat Patties to inquire about samples to review. There are three moderators that handle our Facebook What Black Vegans Eat group, and I thought it would be good to have them try the products and share their experience with you.
The family that runs Joe’s Oat Patties responded by sending over several samples for us to try. I emphasized that I wanted to use their products in my recipes as I would normally use other ingredients, to level the playing field and make the taste test equal and fair.
Of course the timeframe I imagined all this wonderfulness happening turned out to be a figment of my imagination, but our moderator Nokthula used the Portabella Mushroom mix and got her review and photos to me right away. My sampling of the V-Egg-An Scramble followed soon after (though my finished product pictures are sad and inadequate compared to hers).
First though, let me share a bit of info about Joe’s Oat Patties:

The Joe’s Oat Patties Team
We here at BlacksGoingVegan.Com were really excited to have the opportunity to review these products.
Though many vegans promote a “whole foods vegan diet” and refuse to use anything which is prepackaged, the ingredients in Joe’s Oat Patties products are a far cry from “processed” foods. As you see, they use only the best, organic, whole food ingredients, which are packaged for user convenience.
After all, busy working singles, couples or parents won’t always have the time to shop for, chop and measure, etc. to prepare all of their meals from scratch. Vegan foods creatively packaged for ease of use helps in your quest to maintain a nutritious, meat free diet.
Joe’s Oat Patties Portabella Mushroom Burger Mix
Nokthula had this to say about the Joe’s Oat Patties Portabella Mushroom plant based burger mix that she tried:
“These patties were surprisingly good, the texture was firm very moist and they held up very well for a burger. I’m not a burger person so I decided to do a type of Salisbury “steak”.
I prepared them per the package directions which were quite easy to follow. They were seasoned well and even my non-vegan other half gave them a thumbs up! He also mentioned that he would of never known they were vegan (that he wasn’t eating meat) if I hadn’t told him.
So with this being said, I would recommend Joe’s Oat Patties and am looking forward to trying some of their other products….

Joe’s Oat Patties V-Egg-An Scramble
Then it was my turn. I decided to try the V-Egg-An Scramble for breakfast, since I’ve developed a sensitivity to commercial soy products. This weird new response meant my former favorite vegan breakfast — a tofu scramble breakfast — has been eliminated from my diet. My new favorite is chickpea vegan omelette. I noticed that one of the recipes for the V-Egg-An scramble looked very similar to it, so I decided to make one.
So I poured my package into a blender as instructed.
Then added the other ingredients and blended as instructed.
.
I decided I would make a vegan breakfast omelette from my mix. Following the instructions to make a vegan breakfast omelette, I chopped up my veggies and got my spices together. Heated up the pan, poured in the requisite amount of the batter, and waited.
Let me confess I am an awful omelette maker. The proof? Right here.
This is what it was supposed to look like!
HAHAHA!!! It’s okay though. The taste was really wonderful. I scarfed that puppy down like there was no tomorrow.
The Joe’s Oat Patties V-Egg-An Omelette mixture would seem to be a great substitute for a vegan chickpea omelette, or joining your meal lineup when observing Meatless Monday as your family transitions to a plant based diet . Though the base ingredient and fillings are different, the ease of preparation and the similarities in both appearance and taste cannot be ignored.
Our overall score, which includes:
- Visual appearance of raw ingredients
- Ease of preparation
- Palate feel
- Taste
- Value/Cost per serving
- Appearance and presentation of finished dish(es)
